Springfield Garden Club's popular plant sale scholarship fund-raiser for horticulture students

The May 31 event, at the Quadrangle, offers variety of plants.

The Springfield Garden Club’s May Plant Sale is its most popular event, and members enjoy sharing their knowledge and expertise about plants with others there.

“And what better way to…raise money to give as college scholarships to youth wishing to pursue horticulture degrees?” commented Jamie W. Risley-Hall, president of the Springfield Garden Club. “It is a long-standing tradition of the club.”

This year’s sale will take place on May 31, from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m., featuring a large selection of annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs and containers at the Quadrangle at the Springfield Museums, 21 Edwards St.

The club currently has 106 members with about 30 members participating directly with the plant sale; others who may not be able physically to help at the sale donate their plants for it.

“The sale always has such a variety of plant material offered. And we never know for sure what members will dig up and contribute each year,” Risley-Hall said. “That is the most exciting part--watching everyone turn up with trunk loads of their plants to share.”

In the past the sale has included irises, hostas, roses, lilacs, dogwoods, lilies, grasses, heucheras, daisies, dahlias, elephant ears, sunflowers, perennials, hanging planters, flower-filled containers, hypertufa pots and few vegetable starts. This year the sale will include a collection of vintage garden tools, yard art etc. for sale.

“I have purchased many plants over the years from our sale, many of which I had never thought to try or to plant before, but because the prices were so affordable, I didn't feel I had anything to lose,” Risley-Hall said. “And they all continue to populate my gardens today. My favorite is a 'Spice Currant' bush I obtained three years ago which is finally showing its prowess in my garden.”

Her favorite part of the sale is the auction of highly prized plants and combination planters.
