Climate Revival

The Rev. Douglas John Fisher, the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts, is among those attending “Climate Revival 2013,” organized by New England Regional Environmental Ministries, April 27 at two worship venues on Boston’s Copley Square – Old South Church United Church Congregational at 10 a.m. for services, with lunch at 11:30 a.m., and Trinity Church, Episcopal, at 1:30 p.m.

The event is billed as “An Ecumenical Festival to Embolden the Renewal of Creation” and features participants both from the Boston region as well as elsewhere.

Those scheduled to preach at services include the Rev. Geoffrey Black, general minister and president of the United Church of Christ, and Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church. “The Climate Revival is a gathering of God’s people who care about God’s Earth. It is a time to understand what is going on, and then act for the sake of future generations. I am grateful to all those who organized this day and look forward to participating in Boston and coming back to Western Mass. with hope and a renewed commitment to this cause.” Fisher said.

The event is being held as part of the United Church of Christ Mission 4/1 Earth. Co-sponsors are Province 1 of the Episcopal Dioceses of New England and Environmental Ministries; Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ, and the Massachusetts Council of Churches.

It has been organized as “the region’s largest and most denominationally diverse gathering of Christian leaders on the issue of climate change.” The program includes a round table discussion at Old South Church with leading clergy from different denominations, moderated by Wen Stephenson, journalist, editor, producer and climate activist.
A climate justice rally following the worship services at Trinity Church has been cancelled because of the recent bombings near Copley Square during the Boston Marathon.
