WILBRAHAM - Sarah Sampson was watching the evening news on TV one night when she was inspired to share her love of reading and books.
Book It!, a program offered by Square One to provide free books to the children it serves from nursery school through elementary-school ages, is the beneficiary of a donation made by Sarah, 11, and her mother, Michelle Sampson.
"I am so glad that Sarah and I could help out by donating books to the kids Square One serve," said Michelle Sampson. "I know that she is proud of the fact that she was helping other kids who were not able to have all the wonderful books she has had over the years."
Sarah was happy and eager to go through her own bookcase and pick out books to donate to children who otherwise would not have them, according to her mom.
Michelle Sampson said her daughter's effort to help other young people is "an impressive act" because Sarah has autism. "She is not always able to relate to others and their situations the same way people without autism can, but Sarah knows and understands one very important thing, reading is not only fun and enjoyable but all children should have the opportunity to have good books to read."
Kim Lee, vice president of advancement at Square One, said her agency is appreciative of the help provided by the Sampsons.
Anyone interested in donating books should contact Linda Lastowski at Square One, (413) 732-5183.
The books are made available through strategically placed bookshelves in the Springfield area where children and their families live or access services.
