March is Newspaper in Education Month, and The Republican is providing teachers with new resources to help facilitate the use of newspapers in their classrooms. This posting contains two free guides for download.

First we have this collection of over 30 newspaper-based lessons thanks to the the Massachusetts Newspaper in Education Council. The guide includes easy-to-use lessons at both elementary and secondary levels, all designed to help students practice for the MCAS. (Visit the MNIEC site for more newspaper-based resources - www.massnie.com.)

MCAS Moments

Another new guide, provided by the Newspaper Association of America, celebrates the power of newspapers as a vehicle for engaging students to read nonfiction text and learn about the world around them.

Geared for grades 7 and up, "Give Them the Keys" is organized into units containing lessons that can be taught consecutively in two, three, four or five days, or used independently. Each lesson is clearly organized to include instructional objectives, needed materials, and a formative assessment. Adaptations and accommodations for ELL students are also provided.
