Let your five sense enjoy the holidays.
I am intent on a “sense”sational holiday this year. Yes, I want to use my five senses to appreciate the season.
TASTE. Each family has its own special recipes. Ours is a drink concoction called "Tom and Jerry's." It is made of beaten egg whites, egg yolk, sugar and brandy. It is served hot, topped with nutmeg.
SOUND. Music of the season includes holiday concerts, the jingling of bells and even Santa's Ho! Ho! Ho! I will also be tuned into family stories of childhood holidays, and, of course, the sound of the snowplow coming down the street.
TOUCH. Hugs and kisses from friends and visiting family members are a special aspect of the season. There is also the sensation of soggy mittens, the stickiness of glitter and glue and the comforting warmth from my cozy woolen sweater and our blazing fireplace. Of course, there is also the touch of worn plastic, from my overused credit cards.
SMELL. Who can resist Bayberry-scented candles, or that of creatively decorated gingerbread houses, at the Springfield Science Museum. "The Magic of Gingerbread," the theme of this year's contest and exhibition, opens on Nov. 29, and continues through Dec. 3. There is also the scent of cookies, hot from the oven, or a warm pie. Don’t forget the scent of the special pine tree, you chose, or cut from one of the many tree farms in Western Massachusetts.
SIGHT. Seeing is believing; the bright red colors of a poinsettia plant and Rudolf’s twinkling nose, the subtle shades of green mistletoe and holly. Our family is looking forward to the Springfield Boys & Girls Club’s 13th Annual Festival of Trees, from Nov. 29 through Dec. 15, in Springfield's Tower Square. The 19th season of Bright Nights, in Springfield's Forest Park, opens Nov. 27, with its diversity of holiday displays. The Yuletide Open House Tours at West Springfield's Storrowton Village Museum take place Dec. 10 to 14.
These are my plans for a 'Sense" sational holiday season. May you have one, too.
