Angels Take Flight has as its mission to help “restore the dignity, pride and positive self-esteem in children of our community.” One of the ways it does this is by providing children in transition with such essentials as luggage, so they do not have to carry their clothes in garbage bags, when they become homeless, or are going through foster care.

The undertaking was founded in 2010, by Tamara Blake, a graduate of Bay Path College in Longmeadow, who has worked with children in a variety of settings over the last 10 years. Other board members include Hayes Murray, a certified public accountant, Melinda Moreno, a substance abuse therapist and Cynthia Rebelo.

Blake said the organization has helped some 1,000 children, with new or gently used luggage, and is currently collecting toys to distribute.

The organization recently held a fund-raiser at Meadows Lodge A.F.and A.M, in East Longmeadow, where several area comedians, including Darryl Rosemond, Artie Rob, who performed at the fund-raiser last year, and Darren Rivera volunteered their services.

"It's for a good cause and that's why I think people have come to have a good time and laugh,” Rivera said of the more than 70 people in the audience.

Saying that Blake has "a great, giving heart," Rosemond added he was happy to have been part of the event.

"I do not even know the child (children) who benefited from this event tonight, but I made a difference in a child."
