For the eighth year, The Republican and MassLive.com are honoring area students for their accomplishments in the arts. This year, The Talented Teens in The Arts section, published in print and online on June 12, honors some 94 area students from more than two dozen schools and studios.
“It is our pleasure to honor this young men and women who have spent so many hours perfecting, enjoying and sharing their talents in the areas of dance, drama, music and visual art. Their abilities add greatly to the enjoyment of life in our communities and sometimes their talent goes unrecognized,” said Anne-Gerard Flynn, Republican Lifestyle editor who initiated the section and reviews the nomination with Matt Longhi, head of the paper’s Newspaper in Education program. Longhi added that “Talented Teens adds a unique element to our efforts to highlight the positive contributions of young people to our region’s cultural life.”
Nominations are received in the spring and the paper’s photographers spend considerable time photographing the nominees in their discipline. Award-winning page designer Patricia Thompson arranges the profiles and photographs for press. Katelyn M. McGovern, of the New England Dance Center, is featured on the 2012 cover photograph taken by Michael Beswick.
