Special activities planned March 23 at Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst."
"The Very Hungry Caterpillar," author and illustrator Eric Carle's beloved classic, will be celebrating its 45th anniversary on March 23, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst.
There will be activities, free with admission, in the museum's art studio, as well as story times and a visit from The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
The character, who never seems to get enough to eat and literally eats its way through pages, is from Carle's 1969 book. The book, with its collage-like illustrations and mix of narrative and nature, has sold millions of copies worldwide, and been translated into nearly dozens of languages. Carle has said he enjoys the fact that parents who grew up with the book are now reading it to their children.
Carle, the author of more than 70 books, many of them best sellers, was involved in food illustrations prior to his notoriety as a children's book illustrator. He did the illustrations for a 1960s-era cookbook called "Red Flannel Hash and Shoo-fly Pie."
Together with his wife Barbara, Carle founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art as the first full-scale museum in this country devoted to national and international picture book art.
The museum is located at 125 West Bay Road, Amherst. It's open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $9 for adults, $6 for children under 18, and $22.50 for a family of four. For more information, visit https://www.carlemuseum.org/
