Just Folks: Hampshire, Franklin, Metro East Plus: Academic honors earned by students from Ware, Wilbraham, Northampton and more communities

Academic honors for local students.

• Union College conducted its commencement on June 15; among the area graduates were Aimee Adamski, of Ludlow, bachelor degree, psychology; Meghan Cole, of Belchertown, bachelor degree, economics, Christopher Leveille, of Hadley, bachelor degree, computer science, and Matthew McKelvey, of Conway, bachelor degree, political science.

Caitlin Keefe, daughter of Yvonne and James Keefe, of Northampton, a ninth-grader at Northampton High School, was named a 2014 Brine National High School All-American and represented the New England Region at the 2014 Brine National Lacrosse Classic to be held in Boyds, Md., earlier this month.

The Brine National Lacrosse Classic brings the top-ranked high-school lacrosse players in the country to one venue, where regional teams will compete to become the 2014 national champion.

As the tournament progressed, Caitlin was selected to play on the all-star team and scored the first goal in the all-star game.

Stephanie Alyse Bacon, daughter of Christine and Stephen Bacon, of Wilbraham, graduated from St. Michael’s College with a bachelor degree, cum laude, in biology.

Jacob William Mazanec, son of William Mazanec, of Shelburne, graduated from St. Michael’s College with a bachelor degree in art.

Aris Winings Touloumtzis, son of Steven Touloumtzis and Sally Winings, of Hatfield, graduated from St. Michael’s College with a bacehlor degree in environmental studies and elementary education.

• Goodwin College in East Hartford, Conn., conferred 578 bachelor’s degrees, associates degrees, and certificates to the Class of 2014. Area students who were awarded degrees included Zoe Riley, of Monson.

William Melnick, son of Leonard Melnick and Margaret Seiler, of Northampton, earned a bachelor degree cum laude with a major in economics from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisc., at the college’s 165th commencement. Melnick is a 2010 graduate of Academy at Charlemont.

• Area students named to the spring dean’s list at Assumption College in Worcester included: Jason Duke, of Palmer; Nicole Riel, of Belchertown; Erin Ziomek, of Wilbraham; Kelsey Adkins, of Wilbraham; and Andrew Donermeyer, of Wilbraham.

• Area students named to the president’s list at Western New England for the spring semester for achieving a semester grade point average of 3.80 or higher included Alan Gamache, of Williamsburg, and Suellen Tracy-Cluett and Barbara Wysocki, both of Hampden.

Kendra Clarke, of Deerfield, and Regina Grover, of Bernardston, were awarded degrees in May by Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pa.

Alec Lieberman, of Belchertown, who is in the software engineering program in the Rochetser Institute of Technolgy B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, made the dean’s list for the spring semester.

Paul Casey, of Northampton, graduated from Ithaca College’s School of Humanities and Sciences with a degree in English.

John Simons, of Hadley, graduated from Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications with a degree in television-radio.

Kassandra Wahlstrom, of Northfield, graduated from Ithaca College’s School of Humanities and Sciences with a degree in anthropology.

Kathryn Weiss, of Wilbraham, graduated from Ithaca College’s School of Health Sciences and Human Performance with a degree in sport management.

Victoria Gates, of Sunderland, graduated from Ithaca College’s School of Humanities and Sciences with a degree in psychology.

Caitlin Phifer, of Brimfield, was awarded a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Rhode Island.

Lauren Bachand, of Belchertown, was awarded a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Rhode Island.

Rena Lapinski, of Sunderland, earned a master’s degree in library and information studies at the University of Rhode Island.

• Area students named to the spring dean’s list at Ithaca College included: Kassandra Wahlstrom, of Northfield; Emmalouise St. Amand, of Northfield; Max Rankin, of Greenfield; and Shannon O’Leary, of Belchertown.

• Area students named to the spring dean’s list at St. Lawrence University include Kristopher R. Lawless, of Shelburne Falls, Nicholas S. DeSantis, of Belchertown, and Samuel K. Downes, of Shelburne Falls.

• Area students named to the dean’s list at the University of New Haven for the spring semester included: Isabelle Allen, of Whately; Alexis Kellogg, of Northampton; Monica Kowalski, of Belchertown; Brianna L’Ecuyer, of Northfield; Jamie Messer, of Northampton; Nicolas Perreault, of Belchertown; and Andrew Turban, of Gill.

Caleb Walk, of Greenfield, graduated with a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich.

Lindsay Bierwert, of Northampton, recently graduated from Hartwick College. She is the daughter of Lou and Kim Bierwert. At Hartwick, Bierwert participated in women’s varsity swimming and diving and honors program. She majored in biology.

• Area students who were awarded bachelor degrees by Assumption College included: Nicole Bell, of Easthampton, history; and Brianna Carey, of Wilbraham, biology.

Katrina Caulfield, of Palmer, recently graduated from Hartwick College. She is the daughter of Margaret and Michael Caulfield. At Hartwick, Caulfield participated in women’s varsity basketball, honors program, and Hooks and Needles. She majored in biology.

Kaitlyn Veit, of Easthampton, recently graduated from Hartwick College. She is the daughter of Elizabeth and Steven Veit. At Hartwick, Veit participated in women’s varsity basketball. She majored in nursing.

Shelby O’Riley, of Ware, was one of 14 students from Susquehanna University who recently spent time in the Galàpagos Islands as part of the university’s Global Opportunities program. The experience, titled GalàpaGOs, is an inter-disciplinary, collaborative course designed to familiarize students with methods, theories, approaches and histories necessary for understanding biological and cultural diversity in the Galàpagos Islands of Ecuador.

O’Riley is studying biochemistry at Susquehanna, where she will be a senior in the fall. She is a 2011 graduate of Quabbin Regional High School and the daughter of Rob and Kerry Sue O’Reilly.

• Northeastern University recognized students’ academic achievement during the spring semester on the dean’s list, including: Emma K. Hinkamper, of Hampden, a student majoring in biology; Angelina M. Sassi, of Hatfield, a student majoring in biology; and Emily A. Costa, of Ludlow, a student majoring in biology.

• Rhode Island College bestowed 1,374 undergraduate degrees and 349 graduate degrees during its commencement ceremonies in May. Austin S. Finck, of Greenfield, received bachelor degrees in justice studies and sociology.

• Area students named to the spring dean’s list at Worcester State University include Belchertown residents Shannen N. Curtin and Allison M. Lapointe, Deerfield resident Elita J. Baker, Easthampton resident Brendan M. Rios, Ludlow residents Kara M. Baillargeon, Joao D. Bernardo, Jasmin N. Correa, Brianna L. Deslauriers, Matti D. Dorval, Cassandra E. Goncalves, Diana G. Sychtysz, Mark Sychtysz and Robert P. White, Northampton resident Casey I. Keedy, Palmer residents Timothy M. Chavez, Julianne L. Harris and Stephanie M. Hurley, Ware residents Lauren W. Keegan and Abigayle V. Sidur and Wilbraham resident Allison L. Czaplicki.

John Ference, of Holland, was awarded a bachelor degree by the Florida Institute of Technology at Melbourne.
