Springfield Central High School students honored at Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards competition

SPRINGFIELD - Eight talented students in the arts from the Springfield Public Schools have brought home honors from the prestigious Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards.

Seven of the Central High School student artists who participated in this prominent arts contest received the honorable mention award and one student was recognized with the Gold Key Award.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, sponsored regionally by the Boston Globe, are the largest and longest-running recognition programs for creative young minds in the United States.

Among the accomplished artists, high school senior Phung Bui submitted a self-portrait painting to the competition that granted her the Gold Key award, the highest level of student achievement on this contest's regional level.

Bui's work is being exhibited at the State Transportation Building in Boston until April 19. She also will be honored during the 2013 Awards Day in Boston and her art work is advancing on to the national level to be judged in New York City by May.

More than 5,000 Massachusetts students entered the New England Regional Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards, and across the country more than 140,000 works of art and writing were submitted.
