SPRINGFIELD - Wes Moore, whose book "The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Faces" became a New York Times bestseller and popular read on college campuses, will give a free talk at 10 a.m. on April 2 in Griswold Theater at American International College.
In the 2011 book, Moore compares his own life to that of another individual with the some name. Both men grew up in Baltimore, were both good students at one point, but the author goes on to become an Army combat veteran, Rhodes scholar and host of
"Beyond Belief" on the Oprah Winfrey Network. The other man is serving a life sentence for murder.
AIC freshman read Moore's book, and Provost Todd G. Fritch noted, in a release, the author's appearance at the college "will challenge our students to think about their choices, their circumstances, and their ability to effect change in their own lives and in the lives of others."
Born in 1978, Moore and his sisters were raised by their widowed mother. Moore graduated Phi Theta Kappa in 1998, as a commissioned officer from Valley Forge Military
College in Wayne, Penn., and Phi Beta Kappa from Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University in 2001, where he played football and earned a bachelor’s degree in International relations. He was named a Rhodes Scholar, studying international relations, in England, at Oxford University.
While a student at Johns Hopkins he founded STAND!, which works with Baltimore youth involved in the criminal justice system.
After his studies, Moore, a paratrooper and captain in the United States Army, served a combat tour of duty in Afghanistan with the 1st Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division. He then served as a White House fellow to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Moore serves on the board of directors for the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America, as well as the Johns Hopkins University board of directors.
