Wearing a uniform can help keep costs down for families, and they alleviate many concerns for students about what to wear.

SPRINGFIELD - Students and parents at St. Michael's Academy had an easy day of shopping for back-to-school clothes on Aug. 1.

It was uniform pick-up day.

Families came to the campus at 153 Eddywood St. to collect the uniform items ordered for the start of the school year.

Students at St. Michael's Academy are encouraged to maintain a neat and modest appearance, and they wear special uniforms that were designed when the school was formed in 2009.

A staple of Catholic schools for years, uniforms have recently been adopted by some public schools. Wearing a uniform can help keep costs down for families, and they alleviate many concerns for students about what to wear.

The affordability of uniforms is a key factor. St. Michael's Academy recognizes that students will outgrow their jumpers and shirts and offers additional help.

A uniform swap, where families may purchase donated and discounted uniforms, is scheduled for Aug. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium.
